Summer is definitely here. That means more outdoor
activities for everyone. And it can also mean more
exposure to insects. Doesn't it seem that insects are
becoming more and more alarming these days? It has
always been annoying dealing with itchy, irritating
insect bites. But nowadays you read of diseases borne by
insects -- disabling Lyme disease carried by deer ticks,
systemic illness and even death from the Brown Recluse
Spider and meningitis from mosquitoes. There is no doubt
that people need to be protected from these and lesser
pests.
The first line of defense is a good insect repellent. Of
course, not to be overlooked is the need for proper
garments, especially if you are going to be in areas
known to be infested with, say, deer ticks. Long
sleeves, long pants, proper shoes, pants tucked into
socks -- all these things can help. The government
recommends using an insect repellent with DEET. But,
what if you are sensitive to petroleum products and
unable to use commercially-prepared insect repellents?
Or what if you just don't want to douse yourself with
toxic chemicals? Do you have to stay indoors all summer?
Here's what my husband, Terry, and I do. We fill a spray
bottle with a half-and-half solution of old-fashioned
Witch Hazel (a natural insect repellent, available at
your pharmacy) and distilled water. Then we add some
essential oils. You can use an eye-dropper, as you'll
only need a few drops of each type of oil.
The first line of natural defense against biting bugs is
PENNYROYAL. Bugs hate Pennyroyal Essential Oil. I have
actually seen mosquitoes land on my arm and take off a
moment later. If you could see their teensy little
faces, I'm sure they would express violent disgust.
"Yuck," they scream, as they head for greener
and less offensive pastures! You can also add a few
drops of citronella, eucalyptus and tea tree. Tea Tree
is especially nice because if you do get bitten, you can
apply more of the spray to help take some of the itch
away. Don't forget to reapply this mixture often,
especially if you are perspiring. You'll be surprised
how effective these pleasant-smelling essential oils
will be in repelling nasty, biting insects. Keep
essential oils out of the reach of children. They can be
powerful and most are not meant to be taken internally.
To keep bugs out of your home, try diatomaceous earth
sprinkled around the foundation of your house and in
front of doorways. Diatomaceous earth is a wonderful
insect repellent and killer of earwigs, ants,
cockroaches, spiders, beetles, silverfish, bedbugs,
fleas and grain insects, to name only a few. It is a
non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils
(diatoms) of freshwater organisms and marine life. It is
also inexpensive, has no odor and is safe to use around
pets and children.
When these marine diatoms are crushed to a fine powder
and observed through a microscope, the particles
resemble bits of broken glass. They pierce the outer
shells of insects, causing them to dehydrate and die. It
is a non-toxic powder and can also be sprinkled on
plants, roses, trees, etc., to repel insects. As with
any powder or dust, it is a good idea to avoid breathing
it in. If needed, wear a mask. This stuff will really
keep the insects out of your home! You can purchase
diatomaceous earth from N.E.E.D.S. Here's their 800#:
1-800-634-1380
Incidentally, N.E.E.D.S. is a wonderful source for
products for the chemically sensitive. You should call
the above number and ask for their free catalog. They
have a helpful staff who will assist you with all your
questions and concerns about finding "safer"
products.
On another note, we get calls and emails almost every
day from people who realize they are unable to stand
perfumes and other synthetic fragrances. Of course our
Homespun Naturals products use absolutely no chemicals
or synthetic fragrances! I suffer anaphylactic reactions
around them and must avoid them at all costs. Here are
some interesting Fragrance Facts to ponder:
* There are over 5000 chemicals used in the fragrance
industry.
* Over 80-90% of all fragrance chemicals are
synthesized, most from petroleum products.
* Even "unscented" and "fragrance
free" products may contain fragrance chemicals.
* In the US fragrance chemicals do not have to be tested
for safety before being used in fragrance formulas.
* One fragrance formula may contain hundreds of
different chemicals.
* Scented products should not be used on or around
infants.
* Fragrance chemicals are added to cigarettes to enhance
flavor and add to addictive and health effects of
cigarettes.
* Fragrance chemicals are volatile compounds and are
known triggers for asthma and respiratory problems.
* And, of course, perfumes and fragrances can attract
bees and other stinging insects. Who needs that? BZZZZZ!
Have a good, safe summer!
Warmest regards to all our friends,
Corinne & Terry Simpson
